What BScN Graduates Need to Know About the NCK Exam

As a Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduate, you must pass the NCK licensure examination before you can practice as a registered nurse in Kenya. The BScN exam is structured similarly to the KRCHN exam but with questions calibrated to degree-level nursing knowledge.

The exam is conducted by the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and covers advanced clinical concepts, research-informed practice, and evidence-based nursing — subjects unique to degree-level training

Advanced Clinical Content

BScN questions test higher-order thinking — clinical decision-making, research interpretation, and complex patient scenarios.

Evidence-Based Practice

Questions on nursing research, EBP frameworks, and clinical guidelines feature prominently in the degree-level exam.

Two Papers

Paper 1 and Paper 2 cover different subject areas. ReviQuiz has dedicated MCQ banks for both papers

NCK-Aligned Content

All ReviQuiz BScN MCQs are compiled from past papers and designed to reflect the current NCK exam blueprint.

BScN vs KRCHN — Choosing the Right Course

Both cadres sit the NCK exam, but the content and focus differ. Make sure you’re studying the right materials.

If you're KRCHN
If you're BScN

Key difference from KRCHN: BScN Paper 2 includes Critical Care and Nursing Leadership — two topics absent from the KRCHN exam. Questions across both papers also require higher-order clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice application, not just recall.

Is the BScN NCK exam different from the KRCHN NCK exam?

Yes. Although both exams are administered by the Nursing Council of Kenya and are in MCQ format, the BScN exam is calibrated to degree-level knowledge. Questions test higher-order clinical thinking, nursing research, evidence-based practice, and management concepts that go beyond diploma-level content. Using KRCHN materials to prepare for the BScN exam is a common mistake — always use BScN-specific resources.

BScN Paper 1 covers foundational sciences at degree level — Anatomy & Physiology, Pharmacology, Nursing Research, Biostatistics, Community Health, and Nutrition. BScN Paper 2 covers advanced clinical practice — Medical-Surgical Nursing, Advanced Midwifery, Nursing Management and Leadership, Mental Health Nursing, Nursing Ethics, and Health Systems Management. ReviQuiz has separate MCQ banks for each paper.

You sit both papers, so we strongly recommend preparing for both. You can buy them individually (Ksh 400 each) or get both included in the NCK Premium or Pro package along with revision notes, mock exams, and all standalone modules. The NCK Premium package (Ksh 3,500) offers the best value for BScN candidates who want complete coverage.

Many BScN candidates find it useful to also practice with KRCHN-level questions to consolidate fundamentals. The standalone subject modules (Pharmacology, A&P, Community Health, etc.) are available to all students regardless of cadre.

Since 2021, the NCK exam has been conducted online via the Digi Proctor remote proctoring system. You need a stable internet connection and a working webcam. The exam is monitored live by an online invigilator. ReviQuiz mock exams are structured in the same format to help you feel comfortable with the system before exam day.

Yes — this is a key difference from the KRCHN exam. As a degree-level nurse, the NCK expects you to demonstrate understanding of nursing research methodology, evidence-based practice, healthcare management, and leadership principles. These topics appear in BScN Paper 1 and Paper 2 and are covered in our BScN MCQ banks.

You can apply for the NCK licensure exam shortly after completing your BScN programme and receiving your transcripts. The NCK sets exam dates and registration windows throughout the year. We recommend starting your ReviQuiz revision 4–8 weeks before your exam date for optimal preparation. Check the NCK website for current exam registration dates.

Yes. After obtaining your BScN practicing license, you can apply for an NCK-approved Higher Diploma programme in a specialization such as Critical Care, Oncology, Renal, or Psychiatric nursing. You will then need to sit another NCK specialty exam for the Higher Diploma. ReviQuiz has dedicated Higher Diploma revision courses for that next step.
